Cat Portraits

An ongoing series exploring the individuality, character and presence of cats through oil painting. Beginning with domestic cat and gradually moving into wild species, the project draws inspiration from the ancient Egyptians and their admiration for cats. The use of a gold background references their association of cats with Bastet, goddess of home, fertility, protection and motherhood. Gold itself was believed to represent the flesh of the gods, and its use in depicting cats reflects their elevated status within Egyptian culture, as well as the devotion and wealth of their owners.
